After Admission - What's Next?

I was awarded a student loan.   Now what?

  1. Direct Stafford Loan borrowers will complete a Master Promissory Note (MPN) and Entrance Counseling online here prior to arrival at Tufts.  Students should only complete one electronic MPN.  Loan details can be found here.

  2. Perkins Loan borrowers will be contacted in the summer via email by our loan processor, University Accounting Services (UAS), with instructions for completing a Master Promissory Note online. The email will come from the UAS partner, signmyloan@signmyloan.com. In addition to signing an electronic Promissory Note, all borrowers will need to complete a Self Certification form. Students will complete this electronic process from home in the summer prior to arrival at Tufts.
  3. Tufts Loan borrowers will be contacted in the summer via email by our loan processor, University Accounting Services (UAS), with instructions for completing a Promissory Note online. The email will come from the UAS partner, signmyloan@signmyloan.com. Students will complete this electronic process from home in the summer prior to arrival at Tufts.

I received an outside scholarship.   How will it affect my aid award?

If you receive a non-Tufts private scholarship you must notify our office in writing. Private scholarships do not normally reduce the amount you will pay to the University.  They will also not replace an Unsubsidized Stafford Loan.  Visit our website for a complete explanation of our outside scholarship policy.

NOTE:  If you want a credit placed on your account for a scholarship that will arrive after the bill due date, please provide documentation of the amount to be received by Tufts (not sent directly to the student), and a credit will be put on your account, pending receipt of the actual funds.  However, this can be done only if a check will be sent by the organization directly to the school.

What will I have to pay and when?

Estimated University charges for the 2012 Fall semester (tuition $21,844, room charge $3,225, board charge $2,715 and fees $978 = $28,762) will be electronically billed to families at the beginning of July. Payment is due the beginning of August.

Health Insurance is mandatory for all students in the state of Massachusetts. Insurance provided in cooperation with the University is available at a cost of $1,878 for the year, charged fully in the first semester. This charge may be waived if a student is already covered by another health plan. Instructions for waiving the insurance charge can be viewed here.

Once you submitted all required paperwork, your financial aid will be credited to your University account by semester, as shown on your Aid Notice. Your Federal Work Study award, however, is not subtracted from the bill, as it is funding that is earned and paid to students on a weekly basis (see details about Work Study below). Also credited to your University bill will be the amount of your Admissions deposit.

A Student Account Calculator is available to help you determine what is owed to the University.

If participating in the TuitionPay monthly payment plan, the first of ten payments is due on May 15. If you sign up in June, payments for both May and June will be required. For more information, and to sign up for the monthly plan, you may go directly to the site linked above.

Complete information about University billing can be found on the Bursar site.

What is the process to apply for a Federal Direct Parent PLUS loan?

For parents choosing to borrow the federal Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS loan), the application process must be completed via the PLUS page on our website.  Any amount borrowed in a PLUS loan will be divided into two equal payments (minus 4% origination fees), usually one in the Fall and the second in the Spring semester. Repayment begins 60 days after the second disbursement. Deferments are available.

What financial aid paperwork might be required of me after admission?

  1. Check your aid application online to make sure it is complete. Submit any missing documents as soon as possible. Do not email tax returns. This is not a secure means of transmission. You may mail or fax documents to 617-627-3987.
  2. Our receipt of your completed blue Financial Aid Confirmation form ensures that all aid is transferred to your bill, so make sure you return this form to us. If you have lost your copy, one can be downloaded from our website.
  3. If there is a sibling enrolled in the coming academic year, you may receive a Sibling Verification Form during the summer. The form can also be downloaded from the Forms section of this website. Aid awards will be revised if this form is missing upon file review at the end of October.

How does work study work?

The Federal Work Study award is not an award that can be subtracted from your bill. Rather, it is funding set aside for you to earn while at Tufts. Once you arrive on campus and have your academic schedule set for the semester, you will receive a password and pin number which will allow you to log onto the employment website to access all information needed to find a job. When you secure employment you will begin to receive a paycheck, at the end of each week, for hours worked. This paycheck will be electronically deposited into your designated bank account.

Where do I go with questions about my financial aid?

Your first contact should be the specialists in Student Services who are trained to answer any questions you may have about financial aid and billing issues. They can be reached at (617) 627-2000, or via email at studentservices@tufts.edu. If they cannot answer your question you will be referred to your aid counselor. Each student has a counselor assigned to her or him, and assignment is based on the student's last name:
