Go Greek!
Introduction
Fraternities and sororities have been a tradition at Tufts for more than 150
years. Having been established in 1855, the Greek tradition at Tufts is strongly
woven into the fabric of the university and continues to grow and change with
the changing needs of today’s college student. The chapters that comprise our community are
traditionally part of a larger inter/national fraternity or sorority, although
at Tufts, this isn’t always the case. The organizations are referred to as
“Greek” partly because they have historically used Greek letters for their
names, but also because those letters and the meanings behind them are a
reflection of the noble ideals and principles adopted by ancient Greeks and the
aspirations of the founders of the many chapters in the fraternity and sorority
community.
Tufts is proud to be home to 16 active general
fraternities and sororities, including nine men’s fraternities, three women’s
sororities, one co-ed independent fraternity, and three active culturally based,
citywide Greek organizations. Tufts is also home to several dormant
culturally-based chapters with hopes of returning to campus in the future.
Greek organizations are very active on campus.
Approximately 13% of undergraduate students choose to
join a chapter. Membership enhances opportunities to
meet new people, achieve academically, hone leadership
skills, and to serve the broader community through
myriad philanthropic and service events held annually.
Alumni networking and mentoring help illustrate the
benefits of lifelong membership and giving back to the
next generation of Tufts students.
