Academic Preparation

BA/MD Early Acceptance program

The BA/MD program is a special opportunity for Tufts undergraduates to gain early acceptance to our medical school. You may apply to the BA/MD program by February 15th of your sophomore year having taken (by the end of that coming summer) two semesters of biology, two semesters of general chemistry and one semester of organic, and having earned a 3.5 GPA.

There is no single or best way to do this. However students who know they cannot take any coursework in the summer should begin with general chemistry. Alternatively, a student who is strongest in biology, may begin with biology, take chemistry in the sophomore year and then organic in the summer after sophomore year. For more information, contact the health professions advisor or look for the information session that is held on campus each year.

A portion of sophomores who apply to the program are invited to interview in April, and receive a final decision by that summer. You will still have to finish the rest of your requirements (with comparable grades), take the MCAT and graduate, but you will be guaranteed admission to Tufts when you are ready to attend medical school. The program is not binding. The advantage of this is that it takes much of the pressure off your last two years. If you are not accepted to the BA/MD program you can still apply to TUSM for regular admissions. Approximately 10 students enter TUSM each year through this program.
