Applicant Email 6-03-09
This email is mostly about choosing schools but first some
reminders.
PLEASE READ
I. To speak with Shirley Smith or Carol Baffi-Dugan
- DO NOT email them
- DO NOT call them
- CALL 6178-627-2000 to schedule a meeting, or come in for Tuesday
open hours.
Any appointment can be a phone appointment – we do not expect you to
take time off or travel here
- Open Hours are still busy so remember the sign-up sheet goes out at
1:30.
II. Notify hprc@ase.tufts.edu
NOW about which committee member will be interviewing you.
Professors Bernheim, Chew, Cochrane, and Mistry have no more slots
available. Professors Fuhrman, DeBold and Phillips are almost full.
III. Reapplicants – remember that you must schedule a time to
talk with Shirley or Carol before your committee letter can be
updated. You must also reconnect with your original interviewer and
submit updated resume, all additional grades, and any additional
letters you want to submit.
SELECTING SCHOOLS
Shirley and Carol are happy to review your list of schools with you.
However, we will not hand you a list. In order for us to be helpful,
these are the steps you should take. What you should NOT DO is buy a
commercial book like Kaplan or Princeton Review’s book and try to
make a list of schools based on average GPAs and MCATs in that book.
- Read the applicant handbook about how to select a school (on our
website)
- Consider your state residency, your interests in a particular
curriculum, school mission, joint program, geographic location or
climate, or noteworthy initiative that a school has.
- Determine your parameters about how many schools you want to, or
can, apply to.
Create a list of schools that you would consider attending.
When you speak with Shirley or me, we will need to see grades, test
scores, resume/nonacademic activities, AND we will need to hear
about the parameters and interest outlined above. We will use all
this information to review and help you perhaps add to/or subtract
from the list you have prepared.

NICE VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY This was passed on by a former student heading on to medical school: The Emergency Department at Brigham and Women's Hospital is looking
for reliable and mature volunteers to play an active role in what
has become a rapidly growing Office of Clinical Research. Volunteers
will have the opportunity to see all sides of emergency medicine.
Additionally, they will receive guidance from experienced physicians
and researchers on a day to day basis. We are looking for someone
who can come in for 15-20 hours per week, but we are flexible and
understand the demands of being a premedical student. A demonstrated
commitment to the department would put the volunteer in good
standing to receive a paid position if one becomes available. If you
are interested, please call Dr. Siddharth Parmar at 617-732-5638.
You can also send your resume or CV to Dr. Parmar at
sparmar@partners.org.
