Tufts Early Assurance and Joint Programs 2010

 

Students who are interested in the dental, medical, veterinary, and public health fields have the unique opportunity to enroll in one of Tufts' degree programs through special programs allowing either early acceptance or shortened courses of study. Bachelor’s Degree/DMD  Seven Year Combined Degree Program

Tufts undergraduates who are completing their first year of study are eligible to apply for a program which will allow them to complete their undergraduate degree in the College of Liberal Arts and their degree at the School of Dental Medicine in seven years rather than the traditional eight. A very small number of students are admitted in the summer after their first year and must maintain high academic standards, complete predental requirements and sit for the DAT prior to the fall of their third year of study.

The Application Process

  1. Tufts first year students apply no later than April 15. The application is available on the HPA website at

  2. Interviews will be conducted in late April and preliminary acceptance letters mailed out in May.
  3. Decision letters will be mailed in the summer after spring grades are in.
  4. Students matriculating in this program will have to declare their intended major in the summer prior to their sophomore year. Participants will develop an individualized plan of study in consultation with their major advisor, pre-health advisor and the Dean of Admissions at the dental school.
  5. Final acceptance to the seven -year program will be made after conclusion of the second year of study at Tufts and the review of the DAT score results.



Program Requirements
  1. Applicants to the program will likely have completed either the introductory chemistry or the introductory biology sequence by the end of their freshman year.
  2. Competitive applicants will have maintained a 3.2 GPA overall, a 3.2 GPA in dental school prerequisite courses.
  3. Students in the program will most likely have to take some courses over the summer in order to fulfill all requirements. While only seven years of academic year tuition will be charged there will be additional charges for summer school courses.
  4. Admitted students will be required to maintain a strong academic record in their remaining predental requirements as well as their other courses. They will also be required to sit for the DAT no later than July 15th after completion of their sophomore year.
  5. Students can opt out of the accelerated seven -year program agreement and complete both degrees in the traditional eight year timeframe; however they will incur eight years of tuition.

Bachelors/MD Early Acceptance Program

Tufts University School of Medicine offers Tufts undergraduates an opportunity to apply to the medical school in the spring of their sophomore year. A limited number of students are admitted, and are guaranteed a spot in the medical school class, provided they complete their premed requirements, maintain a high level of academic performance, are in good standing and complete the bachelor’s degree at Tufts.

The Application Process

  1. Tufts sophomores apply no later than February 15.  As part of the application process, students will need three letters of recommendation from Tufts faculty members.
  2. The Medical School will invite some portion of applicants for interviews in early April.
  3. Decision letters will be mailed in the summer once spring and summer grades are received.
  4. Admitted students will file an AMCAS application in the summer after their junior year indicating that they want to continue with the program (rather than apply to other medical schools). You will have the option of opting out of the program at this point.
  5. Final acceptance will be mailed to senior students once all AMCAS materials are in, MCAT scores are reported and premed courses are completed.


Program Requirements

  1. Competitive applicants will have completed 2 introductory biology courses, 2 introductory chemistry courses and one organic chemistry course no later than July of the application year.
  2. Competitive applicants will have an overall and math/science GPA of 3.5.
  3. Students will normally be expected to complete required courses at Tufts.
  4. AP credit may be accepted but students are advised to do additional science work at Tufts for the Admissions Committee to review.
  5. Admitted students must complete the remaining premed requirements and maintain a strong academic record in those courses.
  6. Admitted students are not required to take the MCAT.
  7. Admitted students must complete their bachelor’s degree and remain in good standing throughout their undergraduate career.
  8. Students who wish to apply to other medical schools will forfeit their spot in the Early Acceptance Program but can reapply to TUSM in the regular pool and will be considered for regular admission.

Bachelor’s Degree/DVM Early Acceptance Program


Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine offers Tufts undergraduates an opportunity to apply for admission in the spring of their sophomore year. A limited number of students are admitted, and are guaranteed a space in the veterinary school class once they graduate.

Participants in this program are offered the assurance of veterinary school admission without the substantial investments of time and energy that other preveterinary students typically make in the process of preparing, researching, and applying to numerous veterinary schools, and preparing for optimal scores on the GRE. Program participants can select any undergraduate major, explore other areas of interest during their junior and senior years, and choose to study abroad, thus broadening their undergraduate experience.

To be eligible to apply, candidates for this program must be sophomores at Tufts and must have demonstrated academic proficiency in their freshman and sophomore coursework, particularly in the preveterinary science courses.

The Application Process

  1. Tufts sophomores apply to the veterinary school no later than March 1st. The application is available online at www.tufts.edu/vet/admissions. As part of the application process, students must submit three letters of evaluation, including one from a science faculty member.
  2. The veterinary school invites a small number of applicants for interviews in April.
  3. Decision letters are mailed in late April.
  4. Competitive applicants will have completed at least two science sequences (most typically the year of introductory chemistry and the year of introductory biology) by the end of the spring semester of their sophomore year.
  5. Students will be expected to complete prerequisite courses at Tufts University or at other universities by special permission of the veterinary school’s admissions office.
  6. AP credit is acceptable as long as it appears on the student’s Tufts transcript.
  7. The GRE is not required for applicants to this joint program; the applicant is required to submit their SAT scores. These scores can either be taken from the applicant’s high school transcripts or the applicant can obtain them directly from the College Board.


Program Requirements

  1. In order to remain in the joint program and be assured admission to the veterinary school; admitted students are required to maintain a 3.4 minimum cumulative grade point average in their undergraduate program, calculated at the end of each academic year.
  2. Admitted students must complete the remaining prerequisite courses, earn their bachelor’s degree, and remain in good standing throughout their undergraduate career.
  3. The offer of admission is not binding; students can defer their admission to the veterinary school for one year, or they can choose to apply to the other veterinary schools.
  4. Admitted students must confirm their desire to enroll at the veterinary school no later than May 1 of their senior year.

Bachelor’s /MPH Five Year Joint Program


The Graduate Program in Public Health at the Tufts University School of Medicine offers Tufts undergraduates an opportunity to apply for admission in the spring of their sophomore year. A small number of students each year is granted admission under this program.

Participants in this program have the opportunity to take four of their required Master’s in Public Health courses while still undergraduates, thus leaving them with only eight courses to complete upon matriculation into the master’s program. Participants are not required to take the GRE but are allowed to use their SAT scores when applying. Program participants can select any undergraduate major.

To be eligible to apply, candidates for this program must be sophomores at Tufts, and must have demonstrated academic proficiency in their freshman and sophomore coursework, particularly in two required Community Health courses - Community Health 1 and 2.



Application Process

  1. The application deadline is March 15th. The application can be found at

  2. As part of the application process, students will need two letters of recommendation, at least one of which must be from a faculty member.
  3. Decision letters will be mailed in the late spring in time for students to plan their fall classes.



Program Requirements

  1. Applicants must have completed Community Health 1 and either have completed or be enrolled in Community Health 2.
  2. Competitive applicants will demonstrate some proficiency in quantitative reasoning as indicated by test scores and/or grades in math, statistics, or epidemiology.
  3. Admitted students must complete their bachelor’s degree and remain in good standing throughout their undergraduate career.
  4. Admitted students must complete CE 154 Principles of Epidemiology and CE 158 Occupational and Environmental Health in the junior and/or senior years, along with two other graduate level courses.
  5. Students who wish to apply to other public health schools do not forfeit their spot in the Five Year Program.
