Exploring Health Professions

Health Communication

Health communication is the art and technique of informing, influencing and motivating individuals, institutions and large public health audiences about important health issues based upon sound scientific and ethical considerations. Its scope includes disease prevention, health promotion, health care policy and business.

Professionals have been working as health communicators for many years; however, the designation of health communication as a field of graduate study is a relatively new phenomenon. At this time only a few universities offer a master's degree in health communication. The rapidly changing health care industry, and the success of existing health communication programs suggest that this field will continue to grow. As the field evolves, it is likely that the number of universities offering the degree will increase.
