Threatening Behavior

Violence on campuses across the country and media attention to it have made students and their families more wary about seemingly threatening behavior and the danger to safety that others may pose. It is probably accurate to say that the educational community’s tolerance for aberrant behavior has diminished. University officials hear many more concerns about safety than ever before. Public Safety and university officials, even mental health professionals, have no definitive way of determining whether an individual’s seemingly threatening behavior constitutes a real threat to others or is something that has been misinterpreted. Because of this, the university has to hold all community members to standards of reasonable behavior. Behavior, including language or other communication that a reasonable person would find threatening, menacing, or jeopardizing to the safety of the individual or of others, may result in university action, including possible separation from the community, regardless of intent.
