The office oversees forty-one student residences on the Medford/Somerville campus. Residential life at Tufts aims to foster an atmosphere of learning and caring; resident assistants (RAs) and hall directors (RDs) are knowledgeable about the university and the community, and are trained to be helpful in many areas including campus resources. First- and second-year students are required to live on campus unless commuting from the home of their parent(s) or if given special exception. Roommates for entering students are assigned based on a questionnaire. Ten hall directors and seventy-four resident assistants staff the undergraduate residences; approximately one third of juniors and seniors reside on campus.
