Student Employment

Payroll

  • The majority of students employed by the University are hourly employees who are paid on a weekly basis.
  • Students are only paid for hours actually worked. Earnings do not include holidays, lunch hours, sick days, or vacations.
  • During the academic year, Tufts’ policy states that students are not permitted to work more than twenty (20) hours per week except during semester vacations.
  • Work-study subsidy of wages applies only to the work period for which it is appropriated; work-study money cannot be held over for use in the next academic year, or used retroactively.
  • Students must monitor their earnings.  Once the full amount awarded has been earned students must cease employment as they can no longer be paid through the federal work study program.
  • The first time students are paid, they will receive a paycheck, even though they have established a Direct Deposit account. This is due to the time required to verify the bank account status. On the Medford Campus, this paycheck can be retrieved at the Student Information Desk in Dowling Hall from 9 AM to 5 PM. On the Grafton Campus, checks are directly distributed to the departments. On the Boston Campus, checks can be retrieved at the Bursar/Cashier Office in Posner Hall. All subsequent paychecks are directly deposited into the designated bank account and an electronic pay stub is emailed to the student’s Tufts email account.
  • All student employee wages are subject to taxes, the rate of which is determined by selections made by the student on the W-4 Form. During the academic year, Tufts students are exempt from paying FICA (Federal Insurance Contribution Act) taxes. During semester breaks, FICA is deducted from students’ paychecks because they are considered full-time employees.
  • Prior to the end of January each year, the Human Resource Service Center generates and mails W-2 Forms to students informing them of their earnings for the previous year.
  • Complete details regarding work study can be found in the 2008 Student Employment Manual.  A link to this manual is provided on the right side bar.
