Preparing for a  Physician Assistant Program

Most Tufts students look at entry level master's programs when they consider the PA profession. These programs vary considerably in their requirements.  The following list should serve as a general guideline only.

Common Course Requirements:

  • 2 semesters General Chemistry w/ lab
  • 2 semesters General Biology w/lab
  • College Algebra
  • Human Anatomy w/ lab
  • Human Physiology w/lab
  • Psychology/Sociology
  • Microbiology w/lab
  • Statistics
  • Other Social/Behavioral Sciences

AP credits from high school may not fulfill courses prerequisites. For applicants who received college credits for chemistry and biology AP courses, upper level chemistry and biology courses taken in college may be substituted.

Frequent Additional Requirements:

  • English/Composition
  • Genetics
  • Organic chemistry/ Biochemistry
  • Cell Biology

Other Common Requirements:

  • Some schools require Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores
  • 2-3 recommendation letters
  • Patient care experience is a critical part of the application. Programs require 960 - 3000+ hours of direct patient care experience (hands-on experience with patients in a medical care setting) prior to applying.
  • Minimum GPA 2.75-3.0
